Hi, I wanted to take my nephew this saturday.. but was unsure if i needed to buy him a ticket alwo…
He could sit on my lap easily as he's small for his age

Loads of kids and tourists sit in the up tiers, partly why we moved.
Took my son as a 4 year old to West v Burnley at the old girl.
He loved it, till we lost.

Took my 4 year old to Villa at home last season. He loved it and lasted 75mins of a dross 1 all draw before I had to take him to the bar to drown our sorrows.

I wouldn't bring a 5 year old. Most don't have the attention span. Make sure you're got a phone they can play on or a colouring in book or similar. 7 or 8 is a safer bet.

Took my 6 year old to an away game as his first proper match (last year against Villa). I figured an away game at a traditional old stadium was the closest he would come to the Upton Park type of experience I had when I was his age. He loved it, no complaints at any point, stood on his chair throughout and still talks about it from time to time now. Though had a bit of rabbit in headlights look about it for quite a bit of it.
He's a proper big character though, very confident, absolutely no fear type of boy. In comparison his younger brother is 5 (almost 6) and I definitely wouldn't take him to any games just yet. He'd hate the noise, and would probably want to go home after half an hour.
In answer to your questions, without any doubt buy a ticket (for reasons others have said), and be mentally prepared to leave at half time.

There was some West Ham tourists next to me a couple of games ago. Dad, Mum, older kid and kid who was probably around five. The five year old was petrified and had to have ear defenders on to calm down a tiny bit. Probably did manage to learn the word cunt though.

I'm guessing he got the reality check at 7 years old as well when we bought their (Bury's) centre back a few weeks later!!!!!

I took my youngest at 2 as had a spare but older one been going since 5 - I’ve always bought him a ticket.
I know that others carry their little ones through the turnstiles with them and sit on their lap.
You can take the chance but if it’s his first game it should be special and getting turned around for not having a ticket ain’t the best for the lad.
You’ll probably get away with it but for what it costs for a kids ticket I’d pay the money.

First brought my Lad to The Boleyn when he was 7… He is 28 now and been a season ticket ever since. It really is our Son/Father time.
